Welcome to the Borough of Poole adoption information page. We hope that you find the following information helpful. If after reading it, you would like to know more about adoption with the Borough of Poole, we can be contacted at the addresses at the bottom of this page and would be pleased to hear from you. Adoption is a way of providing a permanent family for children who, for various reasons, are unable to live with their birth parents. It is a legal procedure in which all the parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters. As this is such an important decision for any child, the law requires Adoption Agencies and the courts to put the child's long-term welfare first. The Borough of Poole is an Adoption Agency. There are many children needing adoptive families,. Changes within society and attitudes mean that there are very few babies awaiting adoption. The children needing permanent homes are usually over the age of two years. Some will need to be placed with brothers and sisters, some may have special medical or educational needs or some may need to maintain contact with birth relatives. What is common among children who need adoptive homes is that they will all have experienced loss and emotional upset. Our aim for all the children requiring adoptive families is to meet the child's needs by carefully considering the adoptive parents (or parent) that will be right for them. Poole operates an equal opportunities policy and welcomes all enquiries. However, because of the needs of the children waiting for adoption, we are not at the present time able to accept applicants from those wishing to adopt straightforward young babies. There are no set ideals about who or what type of family makes a good adoptive home. People with different life experiences will be able to meet the differing needs of the children. In line with the law and adoption regulations, we are required as an agency, to consider all the relevant information about prospective adopters in the form of a detailed assessment. The initial step for anyone considering adoption is to make contact with the Adoption Agency. In Poole, following this initial telephone contact, enquirers are invited to an information day. This is an opportunity to explore in detail, some of the issues that need to be considered by prospective adopters. Following the information day, a Family Placement Social Worker makes a home visit to those enquirers who wish to take their interest further. Throughout the assessment process, prospective adopters are given opportunities to carefully consider the issues involved in adoption, both on an individual level and in preparation groups. There are also opportunities to meet with adoptive parents, adults who have been adopted and birth parents. Adoption is a lifelong process that inevitably has its times of stress and difficulty. In Poole, we have a lively social group and regular support groups for adopters. We are a small authority that benefits from a geography that enhances mutual support between adoptive parents. In addition, many Poole adopters are happy to provide advice and support to prospective adopters, during the assessment process.
